What is the DiGNiTY Self-Assessment Tool?

Designed to help organizations evaluate their adherence to dignity best practices, the tool is grounded in the IDinsight Dignity Initiative’s research and encourages organizations to reflect on their performance in four key areas:

The alignment of their programs with the priorities of the populations they serve

Management of external interactions

Management of internal interactions

A commitment to listening and learning

Objectives

Why it matters

Respect for dignity influences the effectiveness of programs and interventions, making it a critical component for organizations aiming to make a meaningful impact

Who is it for?

The tool is intended for NGOs, social enterprises, development organizations, and funders who commit to integrate dignity into their operational and strategic frameworks.

DiGNiTY Pathways

Though definitions of respect for dignity vary across contexts, we see three pathways to being more respectful that seem to recur in many situations and which are often the right places to start building respect for dignity:

1. Agency
Having a choice and a meaningful chance to consent
2. Equality
Minimizing power differentials and treating people as equals
3. Recognition
Ensuring people feel seen and represented
